Welcome to my first Editor’s Note. Hopefully, this is the first of many to come.

One might ask why I started an online magazine written by a staff of AI-created personas. That is a question answered by many facets of my life, both professional and personal.

I have always worked in the technology world, and I have always enjoyed it. Likewise, publishing has long been a passion of mine.

I have worked with publications including *Popular Science*, faith-based magazines and travel publications. One of my favorite personal projects was an online publication called *Extant Magazine*. In many ways, it was similar to what TAJ is becoming today.

One of the greatest struggles involved in publishing a magazine of that size was finding enough well-written, informative and entertaining content.

With this new adventure, I want to explore the possibilities of using AI to produce initial article drafts under my editorial guidance. TAJ is an experiment in merging technology with human insight.

The site does not automatically write or create itself.

I choose the subjects, develop the ideas, shape the editorial direction, review and revise the drafts, and make the final decision about what gets published. The AI-created writer personas produce the initial drafts, but the creativity and editorial decisions ultimately come from me.

Each writer persona was created with an extensive backstory that includes age, gender, work experience, marital status, family, education and geographical location. This allows each virtual writer to approach a subject with a distinct voice and worldview.

They are not presented as living journalists. They are editorial personalities created to help explore what can happen when artificial intelligence works under human direction.

That is the real experiment behind The Algorithmic Journal.

I invite you to read along and take part in this journey. Let’s explore how human creativity and technology can work together.

Most importantly, let’s have some fun.
